Menteri Pertahanan (Menhan) Letjen TNI (Purn.) Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin dan Duta Besar Amerika Serikat untuk Indonesia Kamala Shirin Lakhdir menjajaki peluang kerja sama pertahanan dua negara, termasuk untuk keamanan maritim.
Kepala Biro Hubungan Masyarakat (Karo Humas) Sekretariat Jenderal Kementerian Pertahanan RI Brigjen TNI Edwin Adrian Sumantha saat dihubungi di Jakarta, Senin, menjelaskan Dubes AS kepada Menhan Sjafrie menyampaikan keinginan AS meningkatkan kerja sama di bidang keamanan maritim.
Dalam pertemuan di Kantor Kemenhan RI, Jakarta, Senin, Dubes AS juga menyampaikan keinginan negaranya melanjutkan latihan bersama Super Garuda Shield yang saat ini telah berlangsung rutin tiap setahun sekali di Indonesia.
“(AS) juga ingin meningkatkan kerja sama di bidang pendidikan dan pelatihan Bahasa Inggris,” kata Karo Humas Setjen Kemenhan RI.
Dalam pertemuan itu, Menhan Sjafrie mengucapkan terima kasih atas kunjungan Dubes Kamala dan menyatakan komitmen Indonesia untuk memperkuat kemitraan yang selama ini telah terjalin antara dua negara.
Indonesia dan Amerika Serikat pada tahun ini memperingati 75 tahun hubungan diplomatiknya. Dalam periode waktu itu, 6.000 lebih warga Indonesia baik itu prajurit TNI maupun warga telah menempuh pendidikan dan pelatihan di berbagai institusi pendidikan di Amerika Serikat. Kemudian pada tahun ini, ada sembilan taruna dari akademi TNI menempuh pendidikan kemiliteran di AS.
Menhan Sjafrie setelah dilantik pada Senin (21/10) pekan lalu telah menerima kunjungan kehormatan dari duta besar dua negara, yaitu China dan AS.
Menhan menerima kunjungan Dubes China untuk Indonesia Wang Lutong pada Kamis (24/10) pekan lalu di Kantor Kemenhan RI, Jakarta.
Dalam pertemuan itu, keduanya berdiskusi membahas isu-isu terkini, termasuk menjajaki peningkatan kerja sama pertahanan RI-China ke depan.
